Jazz Lessons with me...

So you don't play Trumpet, but still want to learn Jazz with me. Don't sweat, that is completely do-able!

When & Where?

I do my teaching in and around the St Albans area in Hertfordshire, and I have a regular roster of Trumpet students who have their lessons weekly. Jazz lessons for other instrumentalists tend to be booked on a more ad hoc basis and are subject to my schedule, but we always manage to fit something in.

Who/What level are they aimed at?

I am happy to teach the basics of Jazz and improvisation to anyone of any ability. However, if you are a beginner, because we play different instruments, it's usually a good idea to have these lessons in conjunction with your regular instrumental lessons. This is because I won't be able to give you too much technical information on how to play your instrument. We are looking primarily at digesting Jazz language.

Jazz students are usually adults and University/college age students, or people with a good level of proficiency on their instrument, who are perhaps slightly more advanced and looking to take advice from more than one teacher or prepping for a gig/audition they have on the horizon.

What sort of content will we cover?

As I have mentioned, we won't be looking at the technical aspects of how you play your instrument (or very little of it anyway). The liberating side of this is it frees us up to look at whatever you want to learn. Whether it's aspects of improvisation, how to approach Jazz harmony, scales, licks & tips or even just learning a particular tune (e.g 'Giant Steps' is always a frequent request in lessons).

I will be able to help you understand how things work, give you ideas on how to practise the things that allow you to improvise freely and help you develop your ability to learn through transcription.

Can you do online lessons?

I have in the past done some lessons online, via Skype/Facetime. I am happy to offer this if that is what you want. But in my own experience, things are much easier and work better for us both if we are in the same room. If this is really not possible then there are literally 1000's of amazing Jazz teachers out there and I'm sure you can find one close to you that works, and if you still want to chat about Jazz then just drop me an email and we can chat about all things Jazz for free! If you really want to hear my thoughts on a subject then also check out my VLOG, there are often Jazz tips and lessons on there, and if what you want to know isn't covered then why not drop me a comment or an email and I can make a VLOG on that topic, I love hearing new content ideas!
